About the artist: (from glsssbirds. Com). Professor Oiva Toikka one of Finland’s most famous glass artists. His work dates back to the 1950’s but is still as popular today. He is most well known for his Birds by Toikka series which took flight in 1972; since then, more than four hundred glass bird designs have been hatched. The collection continues to grow and showcases his boundless imagination, love for nature, and glass expertise. Each bird is designed by him, many based on actual species, before being handcrafted in Finland by iittala’s master glassblowers. Their handcrafted nature allows each one to be a unique pieces of art. Collecting these birds has become a shared love across continents between bird lovers, glass art enthusiasts, and fans of Finnish design. Toikka has won numerous prestigious awards including the Kaj Franck Design Prize and the Prince Eugen Medal. In 1993, Toikka was given the honorary title of Professor of the Arts by the state of Finland.
Exceptionally large glass bird Magpie (Harakka) by Oiva Toikka 1990s and manufactured at Nuutajärvi Iittala glass factory. No defects, minimal signs of use. Lenght of the bird is approx. 32 cm and it’s approx 15 cm tall. Signed and has original Nuutajärvi factory sticker. Below the signature is the inscription made to the original owner “Laima 16.5.1992″. I wrap carefully and all my items are insured for lost or broken.
