The Ruby Bird was introduced in 1992 and is surely one design that every collector of Oiva Toikka glass birds must have. The Ruby Red Bird has a transparent ruby red with silver and metallic blue spots and changes color with different light. On the base of each individualized bird is acid-stamped the signature of the artist and of his studio in Nuutajärvi, Finland.

An item that has been used previously. Used, Vintage Hand Blown Vase Soliflore Model “Karaphi” Blue Glass Signed by Timo Sarpaneva, Iittala Manufacture Finland 1958. One of postwar Finland’s most celebrated designers, Timo Sarpaneva was born to a family of blacksmiths and textiles artists in Helsinki in 1926. He studied graphic design and drafting at the Taideteollinen Korkeakoulu (now known as the Aalto University School of Arts, Design & Architecture) between 1941 and’48. In 1949, he won a prize in glass design from Riihimäki Glassworks, and the following year Karhula-Iittala hired him as a designer and exhibition programmer. Sarpaneva’s designs for Iittala earned both the man and the company international acclaim, particularly through presentations at the Triennale di Milano in the 1950s. Inspired by modernist principles of reduction and experimentation, Sarpaneva pioneered a number of new techniques and forms in glass design. Width: Approx 2.6.

My favorite beautiful glass bird. The yellow Contrasti bird offers layers of rich yellow glass around a solid black center, creating a beautiful contrast of light and dimension. Surprisingly substantial in weight, the Contrasti bird is sleek and polished; a magnificent work of contemporary interpretation. Each Vigna Bird is individually handcrafted by master glassblowers at iittala’s renowned glassworks in Nuutajärvi, Finland. The time-intensive process of forming, cutting, and polishing each bird showcases the skill of these craftsmen. Approx 23 cm (9″) long and 11 cm (4’25”) tall. Vigna Iittala and has original sticker. In excellent vintage condition without any chips, cracks, grayness or deep scratches. Only small signs of normal wear. I post world wide and wrap with care. Highlights are from the lighting, not the product. Designer : Oiva Toikka 29. May 1931 – 22. Year of manufacture : 1991 – 1997. Made in Finland Nuutajärvi by iittala Finland.
