Immediately recognizable as a pigeon, but not the kind of pigeon one would encounter in most cities, Toikkas rendition of the common bird has a mystical quality. Like many of Toikkas creations, his pigeon is a mixture of fiction and reality, proportioned as his imagination sees fit. Its stunning glass finish will inspire you as the light hits the surface, revealing the rainbows of color contained therein. The body of the pigeon is plump and humble, but Toikkas beautiful use of color endows it with an ethereal glory. The birds head has a metallic grey finish that changes according to the light and its granite colored beak displays a similar effect. Its lovely white body is speckled with air bubbles and light brownish markings, which give the illusion of plumage. This effect is the result of a serendipitous event at the Nuutajrvi glass factory in which workers discovered that dirt left in the molds produced tracery-like markings on the glass. Toikka, seeing the potential in these markings, decided to incorporate this supposed defect into his designs. The vivid yellow head and metallic beak are wonderful counterpoints to the otherwise monotone bird. 8″ L x 3-1/2″ W x 4-3/4 H (20 x 9 x 12 cm). Toikka, Nuutajärvi, Finn Fest 2009. Hand-blown in Finland, it features a glossy finish and stands at 4 1/3 inches tall, with a length of 7 inches and width of 4 inches. Sinikki Oiva Toikka Special Bird Design blown Glass Iittala Finland. This Sinikki glass bird was specially designed by famous professor Oiva Toikka for the city of Vantaa in Finland, to give as presents for long-time employees, usually at their 50th or 60th birthday. It is blue with spots, a light blue head and turquoise tail. The Sinikki birds have not been offered for sale in Iittala shops. Size: 230mm x 140mm.
