The 2008 annual bird gets its name from a piece of Finnish poetry, Kukunor and Kalahari, by Lauri Viita. The poem tells the story of two trolls who spend a winter in a professors empty summer cottage, entranced by the wonders of its library. A celebration of imagination and life, this poem captures many of the themes that reappear again and again in Toikkas work. Like the poem, Toikkas Cuconor is a beautiful work of fiction. It has a round white body, enlivened by flecks of gold, rose, green and blue. The metallic marks shimmer in the light, awakening a sense of wonder in all who lay their eyes upon it.
