The 2008 annual bird gets its name from a piece of Finnish poetry, Kukunor and Kalahari, by Lauri Viita. The poem tells the story of two trolls who spend a winter in a professors empty summer cottage, entranced by the wonders of its library. A celebration of imagination and life, this poem captures many of the themes that reappear again and again in Toikkas work. Like the poem, Toikkas Cuconor is a beautiful work of fiction. It has a round white body, enlivened by flecks of gold, rose, green and blue. The metallic marks shimmer in the light, awakening a sense of wonder in all who lay their eyes upon it. Its small head is made of clear glass so as not to distract from the subtle beauty of its stunning body.
