This is a vintage Flycatcher (Sieppo, in Finnish) by Oiva Toikka. Iittala The beak is red and the colour of the body changes, according to the kind of light it is exposed to, going from green to black, as it is one of the rarer Neodymium birds. The signature on the bottom reads Oiva Toikka Nuutajärvi Notsjo. The Sieppo birds were part of Nuutajärvi’s 1972 collection, which included a number of other glass pieces. The idea of launching a separate bird collection was born only later on. Two versions of the Sieppo were produced – with and without a foot. The colours are stunning and very vivid which made the birds very appealing to the public. (Adapted from the Birds by Toikka book – Werner Söderström Osakeytiö – Helsinki – 2008 – page 16). Oiva Toikka’s birds were handmade in Nuutajärvi, a glass-making village in Finland. The creation of the birds demands great technical and artistic insight from the glassblowers. Each bird is unique, featuring its own distinctive colour variations. Condition: Excellent vintage condition. No chips, cracks, restoration or other flaws.
