Trained in graphic design, he gained international acclaim through his work at Iittala, where he introduced groundbreaking glass techniques, including the steam-blown Lansetti, Kajakki, and Orkidea vessels. His iconic i-Linja series, launched in the 1950s, became a hallmark of Finnish design and introduced the lowercase “i” logo still used by Iittala today. Sarpaneva’s work in glass, including his renowned Finlandia series, earned him numerous awards, and his designs are featured in major museums worldwide. A shimmering example of the purity and beauty of glass, the 2011 Coral Eider Annual Egg by Oiva Toikka is aglow with bold color and simple design. Matching the color of the Caribbean Sea, the idyllic cerulean waters are captured in the teal-blue hue of the Annual Egg. Speckled with marbled orange spots, the polka dotted design begins at the top of the egg and slyly swirls around to its base. Matching the 2011 Coral Eider Egg, the egg can be displayed as a twosome or displayed it on its own; either way this egg is a collectors must-have. The 2011 collection of birds by Oiva Toikka are individually mouth-blown by the master glassblowers at iittalas glassworks in Nuutajrvi, Finland. Each handcrafted iittala Toikka Annual Coral Eider Egg carries the etched signature O. Toikka Nuutajrvi on its base to ensure its authenticity. 3-1/4 W x 5 H (8.3 x 12.7 cm). Toikkas red tern is a gorgeous bird made of scarlet transparent glass. It is the most vibrant bird in Toikkas 2009 collection, which is otherwise more subdued. When illuminated by the surrounding light, it glows crimson, making it a great piece to display in a window. The birds head is made of clear glass, which gives the bird just the right amount of interest. It is a petite bird, standing only three inches high, but its bold color and robust body give it strength beyond its size.
