This Colori Bird is a sleek, polished sculptural piece. Stunning sea blue/green is used to create the body while the head is a gentle garnet red glass. Although Iittala officially identifies the color of this bird as sea blue, I have always considered the color as more greenish than bluish. Openings at the tail and beak of this bird allow light to fill the inside and shine through its brilliant colors. You can easily picture this bird darting though the water with its smooth torpedo-like shape. This bird was handcrafted by a master glassblower at Iitala’s renowned factory in Nuutajarvi, Finland. In this instance, the master glass artist is Giorgio Vigna whose signature, “G Vigna, ” along with Iitalla’s trade mark are affixed to the base of the bird. The time-intensive process of forming, cutting, and polishing each bird showcases the skill of the craftsman. This Sea Blue and Garnet Red Colori glass bird measures about 4″ tall and 7″ long. The white speckles which appear in the photos are solely light reflections when I took the pictures. It should be noted that on the base of bird where the signatures appear there are a few light scratches appearing beneath the glass surface. I had no reason to dispute the explanation since you feel no indentations of any kind when you apply the palm of your hand to the base.
