The blue-and-white Kiuru (referring to the Eurasian skylark) honors a palette that is the essence of Finland: sky blue with clouds, blankets of snow and the deeper blue of twilight and dusk. In the artist’s own words, Kiuru is what makes the summer: it announces the arrival of summer one month in advance according to Finnish legend. Kiuru also has the ability to fly it is currently the only member of the Birds by Toikka collection to have wings. Kiuru requires precision and professional, skilled craftsmanship, along with the expertise and hard work of five glass-blowers. Every part of the bird the body, wings, head and tail is made separately using the veiled glass technique. Opal white glass is blown into a mold, which enables small air bubbles to form on the surface of the glass. The blue dye is added as a powder onto the surface of the glass and excess dye is removed. Pearl-like patterns are left behind. Each part is finished with a layer of clear glass. The sections of the birds created by the glass-blowers are connected to each other while they are still hot, before the bird receives its finishing touches. Making one Kiuru requires enormous precision and highly accurate timing of the group’s work at every stage in the process. Sand, soda, lime and fire. In the heart of the hot shop, in a fiery kiln, elements melt to create red-hot glass mass. A skilled hand grabs a pipe, lifts a gather of glass out of the oven, and starts working on it: calmly, phase by phase. Twirl, lift, blow – a small miracle takes place: the unique idea of an artist appears in the mass. At the Iittala glass factory in Nuutajarvi, a millenia-old tradition of glassmaking is strongly alive. This is the birthplace of Iittala’s jewels – the glass birds. Dimensions – approx 7.8″ x 5.3″. Mouth Blown – each is unique. The item “Iittala Oiva Toikka Kiuru Glass Bird 2017 Annual Bird” is in sale since Thursday, February 01, 2018.
