This stunningly beautiful, quirky piece orf art glass by Oiva Toikka is a Sooty Owl (Nokipöllö, in Finnish). The Sooty Owl is quite large and heavy and is one of the several members of the owl family designed by Oiva Toikka over the years. The Owl’s body is shiny black with lustre silver golden light reflecting scale like effects. The face is shiny black with silver features. The fact that the owl’s face is attached to the bird’s body when it is still molten is a particular technical challenge. A mould is used to “imprint” the face’s features , which look as if they were painted. However, not a single Oiva Toikka bird is painted, all lines and colours are glass.
