Oiva Toikka (born in Karelia 1931) is a highly respected Finnish glass designer. He is renowned for his designs for glassware for Iittala the Finnish design company. Along with his glassware designs, Toikka is best known after 1973 for his designs for the Iittala’glass birds’ series. Toikka’s designs are produced at the glass factory at Nuutajärvi. Oiva Toikka’s boundless inspiration and imagination find expression in his glass birds. Toikka’s birds are handmade in Nuutajärvi, a glass-making village in Finland that is two hundred years old. The creation of the birds demands great technical and artistic insight from the glassblowers. Each bird is unique, featuring its own distinctive colour variations. Professor Oiva Toikka’s surprising and bold glass art deviates from the streamlined aesthetic of Nordic design. An internationally renowned artist, he has won numerous respected awards in recognition of his consummate artistry. The Birds collection is Toikka’s best-known tour de force and it is renewed annually. The birds are highly sought after as gifts and collector s pieces. 1931 is as colourful as his art. The Karelian-born Toikka has designed everyday glassware, scene design and lectured at universities, but his greatest passion has been art glass.
